The Joseph Jefferson Home was built in 1870 by actor Joseph Jefferson. It is surrounded by the 25 acre Rip Van Winkle Garden. It is located on top of a coastal salt dome on Lake Peigneur. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Joseph Jefferson purchased "Orange Island" in 1869 and built a winter home on the site. Jefferson played Rip Van Winkle from the Washington Irving tale. He named the gardens for the character he portrayed.
